Event Systematic perspective

The significance for workforce planning is the narrowness of the use case. A bounded activity gives a team something concrete to measure: completed transfers, delays, human interventions and effects on neighbouring work. It also makes training more precise. Employees need to understand the particular process and its exceptions, rather than an abstract promise of general automation.

A warehouse operator considering a comparable trial should map the entire transfer, including upstream supply and downstream capacity. If another station is already the bottleneck, a faster transfer may not improve total output. A useful business case therefore records the flow of work and the support effort around the robot, not just the machine’s movement.

Put it into practice

  • Choose a repetitive task with clear start, finish and acceptance conditions.
  • Track intervention time and recovery alongside throughput during the trial.
  • Review the task with the employees who handle exceptions and incorporate their observations before expansion.
