Event Systematic perspective

A training programme should prepare employees for ordinary work and exceptions. Knowing what a robot is meant to do is only the beginning. People also need to recognise when output is unacceptable, know whom to contact and understand which actions they are authorised to take. These expectations should be taught through supervised practice in the actual work setting.

HR can help by documenting the changes to responsibility and progression. If an operator becomes a trial coordinator, define the added skills, protected learning time and recognition attached to that role. A technology project should not quietly create additional supervision work without acknowledging it.

Put it into practice

  • Develop scenario exercises for missing parts, unusual output and an interrupted workflow, using the site’s approved procedures.
  • Require a supervisor to observe competency before independent participation in the trial.
  • Collect questions after each session and revise the learning material around recurring misunderstandings.
