Event Systematic perspective
The next step after identifying a gap is to define the work a learner should be able to perform. A broad ambition such as ‘be AI-ready’ is difficult to assess. A narrower outcome—prepare a checked maintenance summary, analyse a supplier dataset or document a controlled workflow—gives the employer and learner a shared destination.
A pathway should include an initial assessment, supported practice, an observed work task and a follow-up review. For employees, scheduling matters as much as course content: learning needs time within the operating plan. For career entrants, the pathway should lead to credible work evidence rather than implying that a certificate guarantees placement.
Put it into practice
- Choose one job-relevant outcome and agree the assessment with the line manager.
- Provide a mentor and access to safe practice material before asking for independent performance.
- Track application after training, including whether the learner had a real opportunity to use the skill.
