Event Systematic perspective

For employers, course selection works best when it begins with demand. A long catalogue of available classes can obscure the few capabilities a business actually needs. Connect the training portfolio to upcoming projects, recurring operational problems and roles that are hard to fill.

An energy or construction business could organise its learning into three layers: foundations shared by everyone, role-specific applications and advanced technical specialisms. Staff should be able to see how a short course connects to supervised work and later progression. Training providers, meanwhile, need feedback on whether learners can apply what they have learned under real conditions.

Put it into practice

  • Map each course to a work outcome and remove offerings with no clear application.
  • Budget for assessment, practice and manager support as well as classroom fees.
  • Review completion and workplace application together; participation alone does not establish capability.
