Event Systematic perspective

Retention is easier to interpret when a company asks whether employees can see a credible next step. Staying in a role does not necessarily mean someone feels developed or engaged. Managers need a practical way to discuss changed responsibilities and the support required to meet them.

A development conversation can focus on one upcoming assignment. Agree the capability to build, the opportunity to practise and the person who will review the work. Then revisit the agreement after the assignment rather than waiting for the annual appraisal. This creates evidence for progression and helps distinguish a genuine opportunity from a vague promise.

Put it into practice

  • Publish internal opportunities with clear criteria and realistic manager release arrangements.
  • Link learning to a supervised assignment and a scheduled feedback discussion.
  • Track access to development and movement between roles, alongside turnover and course completion.
